We are deeply disappointed that NHS England has confirmed that it will not routinely fund second stem cell transplants for patients who have relapsed.
This is the wrong decision, and one which may deny the chance of a cure to patients with blood cancers and blood disorders.
We understand and share the concern that patients and their families feel about this issue. Since this decision was initially announced in July, our supporters have helped us campaign to reverse the decision. More than 6,500 people wrote to their MP, in addition to over 18,000 people who signed a letter to the Health Secretary.
We were overwhelmed by the response to the campaign, and would like to thank every supporter who took action. We have not yet achieved the result that patients need, but we will not give up.
NHS England has said that this decision will be revisited in Spring next year. Between now and then we will continue to put forward the case for second transplants, and will strengthen our campaign in every way we can.
As part of the announcement it was also confirmed that NHS England will routinely fund first transplants for patients with Waldenström’s Macroglobulinaemia. We welcome the fact that stem cell transplant remains an option for patients with this condition, and would like to thank every supporter who backed the campaign to guarantee funding.
