Deloitte employee Sam Wills donated his bone marrow to a stranger in an attempt to save their life last week. He is now encouraging more people to sign up to the Anthony Nolan bone marrow register.

Sam, 25, says, ‘It sounds a bit strange, but the donation was actually quite a pleasant experience. I went into the hospital in the morning and five hours later it was over. I felt a little tired for a couple of hours afterwards, but I was back at work the next day. I definitely want to hear how my recipient gets on and whether the bone marrow transplant will be successful.’

‘So many people think that bone marrow donation is a scary and painful process but it’s actually really simple and painless. I genuinely believe that if more people knew the facts, more people would sign up as donors. All I’ve done is take a day out of my life to help someone in desperate need of a transplant – it’s such an easy thing to do.’

Lila Dowie, Senior Corporate Partnerships Manager at Anthony Nolan, says, ‘Sam has done something amazing in donating his bone marrow and helping to save the life of someone he has never met. We need more people to think like Sam, and sign up as bone marrow donors, because there are blood cancer patients out there who are still searching for their match. It is also essential we raise the funds to be able to continue our work.  Whether you join the register or get your company to support Anthony Nolan, we need your support - everyone can be a lifesaver.’

. Potential donors simply need to fill in a short application form and provide a small saliva sample.
