Rik and Kas Basra will meet His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, when he officially opens The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre at De Montfort University (DMU) today.

Rik and Kas worked closely with DMU and its award-winning Square Mile project earlier this year when they recruited an incredible 366 DMU students to the Anthony Nolan bone marrow register. DMU has now invited Rik and Kas to meet Prince Edward as part of the day’s celebrations, to discuss all the work they’ve done to raise awareness of the need for more black, Asian and other ethnic minority (BAME) bone marrow donors.

Rik was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2009, and received a successful transplant through Anthony Nolan in 2011. Since then he and his wife Kas have worked hard to increase the number of BAME donors on the register, as blood cancer patients from those backgrounds have just a 40% chance of finding a suitable donor.
