You could give someone like Will another chance to live
18-year-old Will is a single seater racing driving. He has won races across the world and had many podiums and wins in 2025 until his extreme headaches, vomiting and weight loss, were so intense that early September 2025 he took himself to A& E. After months of tests and spending nearly 8 months in hospital, Will has now been diagnosed with XLP1 – a condition so rare there are only 15 Neuro XLP1 cases worldwide.
Will now needs a stem cell transplant to give him another chance to live, with a matching donor not yet found. His family is urging more people, especially young men aged 16 to 30, to sign up as potential stem cell donors.
The side effects from the drugs that are keeping him stable are intense. For a young man who was in his prime, to 3 -4 days in a row where he sleeps for twenty hours a day and can’t get out of bed is heartbreaking. We are still processing what has happened and all we can think of is getting Will to transplant. We desperately want him to have some time where he feels ok to just be out of bed.
Will’s take on it is, if it's going to help anybody in the future, then he’s happy to share his story
