The impact of the #nomakeupselfie campaign has extended to many cancer charities, and here at Anthony Nolan it's prompted a surge in bone marrow donors.

On Wednesday 19 March, we saw a 343% increase in people joining the bone marrow donor register through their website. That's over 900 more potential lifesavers.

From our web stats, it looks like this is due to the #nomakeupselfie campaign. We've thanked everyone who signed up on Facebook and Twitter with a selfie of our own.

Our Head of Marketing, Alex Scott, said:

“Yesterday we saw an incredible 343% increase in people applying to become bone marrow donors. Our website also saw a 276% increase in referrals to our site from Facebook, for the same period.

We didn’t launch any other awareness initiatives yesterday so we believe this phenomenon can be explained by the increased levels of cancer awareness raised by the #nomakeupselfie social media campaign.

The trend has tapped into the amazing energy of our supporters and will help us save more lives.

"But it’s not just buzz - what’s particularly amazing about this is that it’s not only helped to raise awareness in general terms, it’s also led to a very real surge of people joining our bone marrow register – any one of whom could make a lifesaving difference to someone with blood cancer.”

How you can help

Want to join the register and make a difference? If you're between 16–30 you can sign up to our bone marrow register here.

If you're not within the eligible age range, you can help by texting HOPE to 81400 to donate £3, which will help pay for us to recruit more donors and save more lives.
