As legislation passes in the Welsh Assembly, blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan has called on the Welsh Government to recognise the significance of all forms of lifesaving altruistic donation. Anthony Nolan runs the UK bone marrow register, which it uses to match bone marrow donors to blood cancer patients in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant.

Henny Braund, Anthony Nolan’s Chief Executive, says:

“We welcome the adoption of this important legislation, and we particularly hope that it will raise awareness of all the forms of donation that can provide lifesaving treatments for patients. Here at Anthony Nolan, we recruit bone marrow donors from the age of 16 – selfless people who are willing to donate their bone marrow to help save the lives of patients with leukaemia and other blood disorders. Mothers are also able to donate their umbilical cord blood to us for the same purpose. We hope that the Welsh Assembly recognises how important these forms of donation are to those who rely on them, and does everything in its power to support them in future.”
