Svetlana Mintschenko, 63, from Primrose Hill, is a volunteer spit-kit packer and courier for Anthony Nolan, and was commended for the Simon Dyson Volunteer of the Year Award at the Anthony Nolan Supporter Awards 2016.
Svetlana has volunteered at Anthony Nolan for two years packing spit-kits for people who have expressed interest in joining the charity’s donor register. By providing a saliva sample in the spit-kit, Anthony Nolan can analyse and register the tissue type of every potential donor.
Svetlana has also completed training to be an Anthony Nolan volunteer courier, a vital role collecting stem cells from donors around the world and delivering them to their recipient within 72 hours. Svetlana also visits donors while they are donating, to chat, give support and answer any questions that may have arisen. This is part of Anthony Nolan’s commitment to continue supporting donors during and after donation.
Svetlana doesn’t miss an opportunity to spread the word about Anthony Nolan, particularly the need for more young male donors. She said, ‘My friends have pointed out that I might be getting a bit of a reputation as I never miss a chance to talk about Anthony Nolan. It's very funny watching a mature woman like me trying to find the opportunity to talk to young men!’
