Become a courier
We save two lives a day, and that’s only possible because of our strong network of volunteer couriers.
Once a person donates stem cells we need to make sure they reach their patient safely within 72 hours. To do that we rely on a brilliant team of volunteers.
As our donors and patients can be anywhere in the UK or overseas, it can take a few hours or require an overnight stay. You’ll need to commit a lot of time and energy but our couriers find it very rewarding.
THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO COURIER VACANCIES - PLEASE CHECK THIS PAGE REGULARLY FOR UPDATES
Who can do it?
You have to meet certain criteria:
-
Are you responsible?
-
Are you physically fit? (Couriering can sometimes involve travelling for long distances and carrying a heavy medical transplant box)
-
Do you have lots of spare time during the week?
-
Are you flexible? Transplants can be scheduled or cancelled at short notice. We use public transport – with most of the trips made by train – but occasionally we’ll need you to travel by air. This involves mainly travel to Europe but very occasionally as far as Australia.
Our clinics are based in London, so if you don’t live there you must have easy access to the city by public transport. We’ll need you to make collections mostly early in the morning, and after your journey we’ll need the paperwork returned to us within 24 hours.
How do you become a volunteer courier?
Step 1: Check this page regularly for future vacancies (please note there are currently no vacancies).
Step 2: Email us to register your interest as a courier.
Step 3: Complete the application form.
Step 4: If your application is accepted we’ll ask you to attend an training session lasting two hours.
What kind of trips will you do?
Initially you’ll make three trips to transplant centres in Greater London, followed by a further three around the UK before you will be considered for international trips. Your destination and length of trip depends on how much time you can give us, as well as the location of the donors and patients. As our collection centres are currently in London, most journeys start there.
Who does the organising?
We’ll make all the arrangements including booking tickets and hotels. You’ll also be covered by our medical insurance. You won’t be paid but we’ll cover your expenses.
