Volunteering Policy

Your hard work makes it possible for us to manage the UK’s most successful stem cell register. So when we take on volunteers, we want to make your experience as fun and enjoyable as possible.

We commit to…

Commitment 1: Induction and training

  • We want you to feel confident when talking to potential donors. To do that we’ll give you an induction to teach you about our work, our staff, your new role and your responsibilities.

Commitment 2: Supervision, support and flexibility

  • We’ll teach you about the high standards we work to and help you achieve and maintain them.

  • We’ll support you by appointing a member of staff who will regularly get in touch to talk about your volunteering.

  • We’ll help you develop your new role with training and support.

Commitment 3: Reimbursement of travel expenses

  • We’ll reimburse your expenses, as agreed with the Donor Recruitment Manager. These include:
    - Your travel to (and from) your home to the clinic/event.
    - Any travel needed during your volunteering session.

This may include money spent on public transport, or a mileage allowance as agreed with your Donor Recruitment Manager. Please keep all your receipts to give to us when we reimburse your expenses.

Commitment 4: Clothing and Health and safety

  • We will give you a special Anthony Nolan t-shirt to wear while volunteering with us. We’ll also ensure you are fully trained in our health and safety policies.

Commitment 5: Insurance

  • Your safety is our priority. Whenever you undertake volunteer work for us, we insure you.

Commitment 6: Equal opportunities

  • We’re proud of our equal opportunities policies and all volunteers are dealt with according to these.

Commitment 7: Dealing with problems

  • Feel free to talk to us about any difficulties you might experience while volunteering. We’ll deal with it swiftly and our Volunteer Manager or a member of the Donor Recruitment team will always be willing to listen to and discuss any issues.

We expect you to…

  • (For Recruitment Event volunteers only) Help the Donor Recruitment and Management teams by promoting the event, welcoming potential donors, supplying information or helping us with any other mutually agreed jobs.

  • Perform your volunteering role to the best of your ability.

  • Follow our procedures and standards including health and safety, and equal opportunities, in relation to our staff, customers, volunteers and clients.

  • Maintain the confidential information of our organisation and our clients.

  • Meet the agreed time commitments and standards. Also giving reasonable notice if you can’t commit to a role.

  • Not do anything that could bring Anthony Nolan into disrepute.
