Publicity tips

Introduction

The regional media always want good local stories about individuals who are fundraising for charity. Good publicity about your event will help you raise more sponsorship money and help us to raise awareness about Anthony Nolan. Ultimately, your help in getting positive regional publicity will help us raise more funds which could help save more lives.

Guidelines for publicity

Whilst we appreciate any regional publicity that you can generate on our behalf, it’s important to provide the regional media with clear and accurate information about Anthony Nolan. The easiest way to do this is to:

Adapt the attached template press release
Show the press release to us before you send it out the media

Remember that Anthony Nolan is available to give you advice and support with any publicity queries you have – whether that’s help with drafting, or information on the latest statistics.

Approaching the media

i) Press release

Please adapt the template press release to fit your circumstances. If you would like any advice on the drafting, please get in touch as we are here to help.

Make sure you include the following information accurately:

Your reason for running for Anthony Nolan
Your contact details so that journalists can reach you
The web address of your sponsorship page
Contact information for Anthony Nolan
The “Notes to Editors” section at the end of the press release

ii) Photos

Photographs can make all the difference, especially in local newspapers. A story is much more likely to be printed with a good photograph.

Think about taking some good quality photos of you training, perhaps in your local park, or whether there’s an opportunity for the press to photograph you during your training. It may be possible for us to provide you with an Anthony Nolan branded t shirt or running vest to be photographed in – please let us know and we will try and sort something out.

iii) Identifying regional media

You need to identify the possible regional outlets for your story, from mainstream local papers to regional radio stations.

Remember, no outlet is too small: often the freesheets circulated in residential areas are very widely read. When calling your local newspaper or regional radio station, simply explain what you’re doing, ask if they’d be interested in covering your story and who the best person is to speak to about it.

Try looking at www.mediauk.com for information on regional newspapers, or simply go into your local newsagent and see what’s on sale.

iv) Monitoring coverage

It’s important for us to monitor all the coverage we receive so that we’ve got an accurate record for future reference.

Please let us know when you think your story will appear so that we can keep an eye out for it, and send us the relevant link if possible.
