Symposium on Alternative Donor Transplantation: The State of the Art
On 23 January 2012, Anthony Nolan is co-hosting the Symposium on Alternative Donor Transplantation: The State of the Art. We are co-hosting this event with the BSBMT and the NHSBT and between our organisations we have arranged a great line-up of speakers. The day will be interactive and features a debate panel in the afternoon.
Early bird registration fee: £50 (£25.00 for Data Managers & Nurses) until Friday 20th January. To book your place please contact carla@hartleytaylor.co.uk or telephone 01844 275650.
The day’s programme and further registration details are below.

NHSBT Collaboration
Together with NHS Blood & Transplant (NHSBT), we are now working to enhance the service we offer to UK transplant centres, and ultimately improve outcomes for patients.
Following the announcement from Public Health Minister Anne Milton on 13 July 2011, £4 million additional funding has been granted to take forward some of the recommendations of the UK Stem Cell Strategic Forum report. These recommendations will help us improve stem cell provision for transplant in the UK.
Anthony Nolan and NHSBT are working closely together to deliver this project, which has three main elements:
1 - Registry alignment
Anthony Nolan and NHSBT are aligning their registries in order to make the donor search and provision processes as streamlined as possible for transplant centres.
From Autumn 2011 onwards, we will operate a single UK-wide registry for UK transplant centres, managed by Anthony Nolan. This means that all search requests for unrelated donors and cord blood will go through Anthony Nolan, and NHSBT will cease to perform search requests.
From early 2012 Anthony Nolan will also manage donor provision services for donors on both registers.
Meanwhile, we will continue to make registering as a donor as easy as possible by enabling the public to sign up through both Anthony Nolan and NHSBT.
Anthony Nolan and NHSBT Register Alignment
We can announce exciting developments which we hope will enhance the service we offer to UK transplant centres, and that will ultimately improve outcomes for patients. This has been made possible by funding from the Department of Health following the recommendations of the UK Stem Cell Strategic Forum. Anthony Nolan and NHSBT have been allocated funding to collaborate on a number of measures aimed at improving the provision of unrelated stem cell donors in the UK.
The first of these developments is that Anthony Nolan and NHSBT are aligning their unrelated stem cell donor registries in order to streamline the process of donor search and donor provision used by transplant centres in the UK.
From Monday 31 October, we operate as a single UK-wide Registry through which transplant centres can search for donors from both the Anthony Nolan register and the British Bone Marrow Registry (BBMR) as well as UK cord blood banks. This is managed by Anthony Nolan who is the single point of contact for search requests.
With respect to the donor provision, transplant centres will still need to contact the BBMR or Anthony Nolan to make arrangements for work-up if they select a donor from either registry. However from 2012 Anthony Nolan will also be managing all aspects of donor provision and we will update you when this is due to take place.
Transplant Centres can follow the link below and access a poster which clarifies how these processes will change going forward

2 - Registry enhancement
Anthony Nolan and NHSBT are investing in new systems to improve the quality of the data we hold on donors and speed up the process of identifying a matching donor.
We are performing a high resolution HLA-typing on a “Fit Panel” of 20,000 donors with common phenotypes who are most likely to be matched.
n addition, we are developing a genotype prediction system, which will enable us to predict HLA types with a very high accuracy rate. We aim to have this available by Spring 2012.
3 - Accelerating cord blood collection
We will be taking the first step to increase the amount of UK cord blood units available for transplant.
Anthony Nolan and NHSBT are expanding cord blood collection at the existing UK hospital sites to 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This will enable us to bank an additional 2,000 clinically validated cord blood units every year.
Our normal services will not be disrupted as we implement these changes. Below is a timeline to illustrate the key milestones. We will send more detailed information before these changes go live.
|
Autumn 2011
|
Single UK-wide registry goes live. Anthony Nolan will handle all search requests for unrelated donors and cord blood units for UK patients, as well as requests for extended and confirmatory typing of donors.
|
|
Early 2012
|
Anthony Nolan will also take on donor provision services for all unrelated donors.
|
|
Spring 2012
|
Genotype prediction algorithm to be available, speeding up search processes.
|
|
Autumn 2011 onwards
|
Accelerated cord blood collection in eight UK hospitals.
|
Please note that these changes will not come into effect until autumn 2011. We will be contacting transplant centres before then with more details about the changes and how working processes will be affected.
In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.
